4 Summer Energy Saving Tips
- Eliminate wasted energy. Unplug electronic devices when not inuse. Most devices still use energy even when they are switched off. In addition, turn off lights and appliances that are not in use. Doing this alone can save you up to 2% in your energy bill!
- Use your appliances wisely. Avoid running your washer and dryer during peak times. The peak times during the day are from 4:00pm-6:00pm. To save energy, line dry as many clothes as you can. Wash your clothes in the warm or cold setting to also help save and always rinse clothes in cold water. Doing this alone saves about 4%. Likewise, believe it or not your dishwasher uses less water than washing dishes by hand! Run the dishwasher only when it is full and turn off the dry setting and let air dry instead.
- Turn up your thermostat. Keeping your thermostat at 75 degrees when you are at home and 85 degrees or off when you are away. This helps keep the furnace from working hard. Use ceiling or room fans to cool when you have the thermostat higher. According to the Consumer Energy Center you save 1 – 3 percent per degree, for each degree the thermostat is set above 72 degrees.
- Replace the furnace filter. Of course another friendly reminder to switch out your furnace filter. To help your furnace run at optimize levels, replace the filter every month.
