WHAT’S THE COST OF STORM AND HIGH WIND DAMAGE?
The damage caused by torrential storms, or excessive wind and rain can range from missing shingles, broken windows and water damage all the way to the complete destruction of your home. Some typical costs associated with repairs to your home after wind and rainstorms are listed below.
Damaged roofing
Whether your roofing is asphalt shingle, metal or tile, a heavy storm can cause major damage to your roof which will in turn cause damage to the internal structure of your home. If you wait too long to repair your roof, you may run into problems with rotting on the wood in your roof. If you have a fireplace, make sure that your professional also checks to make sure you don’t have other factors that will contribute to leaks such as a crack between your chimney and house. You will also want to check your gutters for damage at this time as well. Talk to your contractor about these possibilities during the estimation process and ask for an idea of what could happen if more damage than anticipated is found. Thinking and planning ahead is key.
Damaged siding
If you have some extra siding left over from your initial installation, that siding can be utilized or your siding professional can match up the type and color as best as possible to fix the broken area or areas. Keep in mind, it may not match color perfectly, especially if your siding has been exposed to the elements for a few years. Another option is to take siding from an unseen area of your home and utilize that for repairing and use the new siding in that place. If areas are too rotten to hold a nail they will need to be replaced before the siding is installed. The replacement can be as simple as cutting it out and fixing with plywood – it doesn’t have to be pretty because you are going to put siding over it. Additionally, most contractors will want to install some kind of building paper, such as Tyvek) over your wood and under the siding to increase the waterproofing.
Deck or porch repair
You may need boards replaced if they are rotted and can’t hold a nail, but fixing your splintered wood is paramount – especially if you like to walk barefoot across your deck or porch. You may also consider protecting your wood again by staining or sealing it at this time. This will help keep your wood in good shape for many seasons to come. If your deck is made of concrete, resurfacing is a process in which a thin layer of polymer or a concrete-like mix, known as an overlay, is applied to concrete. The overlay is similar to concrete and fills in the gaps and cracks, and polishes over scratches and other unsightly areas. Once the overlay is applied, your concrete surface will look like new. Resurfacing your existing concrete is a great opportunity to make other improvements. If you’ve wanted to dye your concrete a different color but feared doing so because it was in bad shape, or you’ve wanted to improve the plain look of your surface with concrete stamping – now you can.
